How to Move, Lift and Store 205-Litre Drums Safely

Handling 205-litre drums safely comes down to four rules: never lift a full drum by hand, move drums over distance on a pallet rather than rolling them, use a drum truck for any vertical move, and store drums on a spill pallet so a leak is contained where it starts. This guide follows a drum from delivery to storage in a UAE warehouse, factory or workshop, and shows which equipment fits each stage.

Why 205-Litre Drums Are Harder to Handle Than They Look

The 205-litre drum, also called the 55-gallon drum, is the standard container for oils, lubricants, solvents, cleaning chemicals and many food ingredients. Full, it holds roughly 180 to 210 kg of contents depending on what is inside, plus around 20 kg for a steel drum. That weight sits in a cylinder about 580 mm across and 880 mm tall, so its centre of gravity is high and it rolls as soon as it tips.

Three things go wrong most often: back and hand injuries from manual tipping, drums that roll out of control, and leaks from damaged seams or bungs that go unnoticed because the drum stands directly on the floor.

Stage 1: Receiving Drums

Drums usually arrive strapped to a pallet. Keep them on that pallet for as long as possible, because a palletised drum is a stable, fork-ready load. Before accepting a delivery, check each drum for dents near the rims, damp patches, bulging ends and loose bungs. A damaged drum goes straight into containment, not into the store.

Stage 2: Moving Drums Across the Site

For moves of more than a few metres, move the whole pallet. A hand pallet truck handles four full drums on a pallet with plenty of margin: our AFL-5.0T is rated at 5,000 kg, well above the roughly 900 kg of four full drums. Check that the pallet is sound and suits the forks. Many chemical stores use plastic pallets because they do not splinter or soak up spills.

For a single drum over a short distance, a drum truck is safer than rolling the drum on its rim, which loses control quickly on ramps and uneven floors.

Stage 3: Lifting and Positioning Drums

Any vertical move, onto a spill pallet, a stand or a vehicle, should be done with equipment rather than by tipping. The AFL-COT drum truck lifts drums of up to 350 kg to 1,400 mm and takes drums up to 600 mm in diameter, which covers standard 205-litre steel and plastic drums. That is enough to place a drum onto a 300 mm high drum spill pallet or raise it to a working height.

If you also lift palletised loads onto shelving, a manual stacker does what a pallet truck cannot. Our comparison of manual stackers and hand pallet trucks explains the difference.

Stage 4: Storing Drums on Spill Pallets

Drums in storage should stand on a spill pallet so that a leak drains into a sump instead of across the floor. Our 2-drum spill pallet holds two 205-litre drums over a 150-litre sump, and the 4-drum spill pallet holds four over a 250-litre sump. Both are moulded in LLDPE and stand 300 mm high.

How much sump capacity you need depends on what is stored and the rules your site follows. A widely used benchmark is 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total stored volume, whichever is greater, but authorities and substances differ, so confirm the figure with your EHS plan. Our guide on how to choose the right spill pallet works through sizing in detail.

Store drums upright with bungs at the top, keep incompatible chemicals on separate pallets, and leave space around each pallet so a drum truck can reach every drum. When volumes grow, one 1,000-litre IBC tank holds about as much as five drums and stands on a single IBC spill pallet with a 1,300-litre sump.

Stage 5: Responding to Leaks

Even with good storage, drips happen at taps, pumps and during transfers. Keep a chemical spill kit at every drum store. Ours comes in a 20-litre bucket with 15 absorbent pads, 2 absorbent socks, disposal bags, nitrile gloves and splash-proof goggles. Under smaller containers and dosing points, a 64-litre spill tray adds a second line of containment. A smaller leaking container, such as a pail or jerry can, can be sealed inside a 76-litre overpack salvage drum for safe removal.

Common Drum Handling Mistakes

Rolling full drums over long distances is the most common, and it is how drums end up running away on a slope. Tipping a full drum by hand onto a pallet is the next, and it is behind many back injuries in drum stores. Drums stored on bare floor near a drain turn a small leak into an environmental incident. Mixing incompatible chemicals over one sump means a leak from one drum can react with another. And a store packed so tightly that one drum must be moved to reach another doubles the handling.

Planning a Drum Store in a UAE Facility

Heat is part of the plan here. Drums stored in the sun heat up through the day, which raises internal pressure and stresses bungs and seams, so shaded or indoor storage is better where possible. If containment must sit outside, choose UV-stabilised polyethylene: our single IBC spill pallet includes a UV stabiliser. Put the store near where drums are used, on a level floor, away from drains, with a clear route for the pallet truck and drum truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Roughly 180 to 210 kg of contents depending on density, plus about 20 kg for a steel drum.

Yes, when they are on a pallet. Our AFL-5.0T hand pallet truck is rated at 5,000 kg.

A drum truck. Our AFL-COT lifts 350 kg to 1,400 mm and takes drums up to 600 mm in diameter.

It depends on the substance, the quantity and the authority. Spill pallets are a common way to provide secondary containment, so check your site’s EHS requirements.
